THE EXPERIENCE OF STUDYING ABROARD
Last year one of our classmates, Jesús García, got a scholarship to go
to the USA to attend High School while staying with an American family. We’ve
tried to know about his experience and whether he would recommend it to all
those who may have such opportunity in the future.
His answer was very positive, certainly. ‘This experience has changed me. It takes more than 10 months of your
life, it means living another life for 10 months. Even though it can get tough
and there are hard moments, there are awesome experiences that you won't have
the chance to live any other time. The mixture of good and bad events turn you
into a more independent and stronger person, who has discovered that there is
something outside your little comfort zone.”
A whole year in a different country with another culture makes you
undergo new events and do lots of new things. We asked him to report an episode
which he would probably keep for the rest of his life. This time he hesitated
between the trip he had made to New York and...
”Every single American movie involving a
high school has something in common with the rest: school dances. The biggest
school dance is PROM. In this dance, the preparations are even more important
than the dance itself. You have to find a group to go with, rent a place to
eat, prepare a good afterparty, rent a tux... However, the hardest part is to
find a date, because asking someone to PROM has to be creative. This is how I
did it: I made a poster that said: "I flew from Spain to ask you...
PROM?" Then my date's friend took her to a Starbucks cafe to "do
homework". According to the plan I went into Starbucks with the huge
poster to ask her. Everyone was looking at us and they started chanting:
"Say yes! Say yes!". She was so surprised she couldn't even speak.
She finally calmed herself down and accepted my "promposal". Random
people at Starbucks started cheering and they took some pictures of us. I will
never forget the excitement and happiness I felt at that moment and I can't
wait to go to my first and last Prom!”
We’ll have to wait to know about the end of this memorable episode in
the life of our friend.
